  • Training course LST for project managers of DB Netz Karlsruhe carried out

    From mid-September to mid-October, a further training course on the topic of “Basics of LST and interfaces” was carried out as an online offer for DB Netz Karlsruhe. On 4 event days of 2 double hours each, the lectures focused on various topics from railway safety technology, which also took into account practical examples in coordination with the client. We would like to thank all participants for their interest as well as the client for the trust placed in us and the uncomplicated coordination of the course development. The continuation of the further training event as required is being sought.

  • Paper on Implementation of the CSM regulation published

    The paper of the research project “Implementation of the CSM regulation (EU) 402/2013 for the operation and traffic management subsystem” has been published.

  • Prof. Trinckauf at the 66th Railway Technology Conference of the VDEI

    Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen Trinckauf supported the 66th Railway Technology Conference, which was organised by the Association of German Railway Engineers (VDEI) from 2 to 3 February 2022 under the theme “ETCS in Germany”, with a presentation. He gave an overview of current ETCS research topics, which CERSS is also conducting in cooperation with the Chair of Traffic Safety Engineering at the TU Dresden and other partners. In addition to this technical lecture, the hybrid event also offered the opportunity for a valuable exchange among experts, also with regard to further research impulses.

  • Pilot advanced training course “Train Control Systems in Local Traffic (CBTC)” successfully conducted

    In December 2021, the course “Train Control Systems in Local Traffic (CBTC)” was successfully implemented first time as a continuing education course under the auspices of Dresden International University (DIU) – as an online course due to the pandemic. CERSS supported the client in the development and implementation of the course and contributed a lecture on the topic of “Safety functions and degrees of automation”. In cooperation with numerous other companies in the industry, a new format was created that met with great interest in practice and will probably be offered again in 2022.

  • Plan review “Pflugmühle” for the Stuttgart tramway completed

    In December 2021, the plan examinations according to § 60 BOStrab for necessary changes in the course of the project “Extension of the Pflugmühle over-corner connection, Möhringen interlocking” (SpDrS60) were successfully completed for the final state. We would like to thank all those involved for the good cooperation and wish them every success in the further implementation of the project.

  • CERSS participates in the working group ETCS of VDV

    The CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik GmbH participates in the working group ETCS of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV).

    One of the aims of the working group is to compile necessary rules and regulations for the technical equipment of ETCS on non-federally owned railways. This topic requires a need for action because the previous national strategy of equipment of ETCS focuses only on federally owned railways.

    We are pleased to support the VDV and its members with our wide experience and scientific studies.

  • Extended management board of CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik GmbH

    CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik was transformed on 20st December 2020 into the legal form of a GmbH. All rights and duties were devolved to the new company according to the German law (§ 122a ff Umwandlungsgesetz). Motive of this merger was the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.

    At this opportunity the management board was extended. Prof. Jochen Trinckauf, Bettina Trinckauf and Dr. Michael Dieter Kunze are now CEO. They are supported by authorized representatives Jenny Oelsner and Dr. Daria Menzel.

  • Participation in the 20th International SIGNAL+DRAHT Congress 2020 (Digital)

    The International Signal+Wire Congress has already taken place for the 20th time this year. Under the motto Digitisation of LST: Start of the implementation, the current developments as well as the future questions of LST were discussed among experts within two days.

    This year, CERSS also gave a presentation. Our Dr. Menzel informed the congress participants about the current status of the of the New Secondary Railway Research Project (NSB) and presented how  NSB can make a input to digital LST on secondary railway. So we are also interested in helping to design and accelerate the ETCS-Rollout.

  • Professional article (publication): New secondary railway – innovative safeguarding vehicle movements

    Today, secondary lines account for about 30% of the total network (in terms of line length) in Germany. Due to the developments of the past decades, the importance of secondary railways for local passenger transport (SPNV) and rail freight transport (SGV) has decreased. The consequence was the closure of lines.

    The joint project entitled “New secondary railway: innovative vehicle movement safety control aimed at increasing the economic efficiency of regional railway lines” (German abbreviation: NSB) initially aims to develop new techniques and technologies for secondary railway infrastructure and on-board equipment. This, in turn, is required to enable their economical operations in future even in less-developed regions, whose transport density is relatively low. The project not only contributes to achieving climate policy goals, but it also constitutes an opportunity to make short-range passenger rail transport in rural districts more attractive, emphasising the importance of shortrange passenger rail transport for public mobility services.

    A project of the CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik last year also dealt with these topics. Now selected results have been published in an article for the journal SIGNAL + DRAHT, issue 11/2020.

  • Review: e-learning course for technical supervisors of the operations control centre

    Once again, CERSS realised a complete digital seminar.

    Instead of the annual attendance course, the seminar in Railway signalling and maintenance took place in a digital classroom. The focus was on the basics of control and safety technology, especially safety components, railway route locking technologies and safety science.

    We will continue to offer e-learning courses in the future in order to provide necessary railway-related knowledge for a wide range of participants.

    The TV magazine “MDR-Umschau” picked safety at level crossings out as a central theme in its programme on 26.05.2020. Therefore, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen Trinckauf was interviewed as scientific director of CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik by the Central German Broadcasting (Mitteldeutsche Rundfunk) about the risks at level crossings and conditions for the implementation of optimisation measures.

    The TV programme concerns with the current state of level crossings in Germany and their updating process. Additionally, it evidences common accident causes with video recordings.

    The obvious public interest reveals the importance of level crossings as an interface between rail and road. Various possibilities of optimisation measures were determined within the framework of the project “Analysis of optimisation potential of level crossing systems” by CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik.

    The television show can be watched in the ARD media centre until 26.05.2021.

  • Technical Article: ETCS Test Cases – Preparation for the commissioning in Germany

    An article titled “ETCS Test Cases – Preparation for the commissioning in Germany” has been published in the technical journal SIGNALLING & DATACOMMUNICATION, issue 5/2020.

    The article summarises the methodological approach and the outcome of the research project, which was conducted by the CERSS Kompetenzzentrum in collaboration with the Chair of Railway Signalling and Transport Safety Technology at the Technische Universität Dresden. In this project, a comprehensive and complete test case catalogue has been created for the ETCS in Germany in order to examine and test the ETCS-behaviours in line with the regulations. By using this catalogue, the ETCS-testing should be focused on the interaction of all the interfaces between human, train, interlocking and ETCS as a whole instead of component testing or subsystem testing.

  • First e-learning course provided

    From 4th to 8th May 2020 the first digital CERSS seminar took place in its entirety. The focus was on the basics of control and safety technology, especially safety components, railway route locking technologies and safety science.

    We will continue to offer e-learning courses in the future in order to provide necessary railway-related knowledge for a wide range of participants.

  • 1. SRCC network meeting 2020 in Annaberg-Buchholz

    As a supporter of the Smart Rail Connectivity Campus (SRCC), the CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik accepted the invitation on March 4, 2020 and took part in the first network meeting in 2020 in the implementation phase of the SRCC in Annaberg-Buchholz.

    In short lectures, various actors expressed their views on the potential, objectives, support options and side effects of research projects of the SRCC. Using two specific examples, the current status of project proposals and visions of the SRCC as a research campus for automated mobility were also presented.

    During the meeting, own ideas were brought in and contacts within the SRCC network were deepened. The CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik is open to the projects and ready to support them.

  • Professional article (publication): State-of-the-art train safety control – requirements and limits

    Current developments and projects in the rail industry are focused on multiple objectives, which may or may not coincide, in terms of new systems concepts, components, and operating procedures. The overall goal is to find innovative solutions that will provide the most effective railway infrastructures with the lowest construction and maintenance costs. Here the question arises of what new requirements must be met and where the practical limits of the potential for optimization lie.

    A project of the CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik last year also dealt with these topics. Now selected results have been published in an article for the journal SIGNALLING & DATACOMMUNICATION, Issue 1 + 2/2020.

  • Workshop for Research project “Application of CSM regulation 402/2013/EU for ‘operation and traffic management’ subsystem of the rail system”

    At the end of January 2020, the German Centre for Railway Traffic Research at Eisenbahn-Bundesamt (DZSF) hosted a workshop with the subject significant changes and their evaluation for operational and organisational changes in the railway system. Its aim was an open exchange of experiences. Therefore, various examples were presented in order to effect an open discussion with representatives of e.g. railway operators, Assessment Bodies and the German Railway Authority.

    CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik supported the DZSF with the execution of the workshop and presented, among other things, the results of an online survey.

  • Sustainable conception of regulations

    In 2018, a thesis and a diploma thesis were supervised under the collaboration between the CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik and the Chair of Railway Signalling and Transport Safety Technology at the TU Dresden. Both of them dealt with optimized, databased regulation stuctures, in order to facilitate perspective research as well as maintenance and amendment of regulations using IT-supported procedures.

    The major results including aims, methodology as well as identified potential for improvement for further research have been published as an article in the technical journal EI – Der EISENBAHNINGENIEUR, issue 01/2020.

    With the knowledge gained and the measures proposed already in 2019 within various specialist groups, it is hoped that in the future the identified solution possibilities and the potential for improvement are to be pursued further, successively practically implemented and, if applicable, deepened.

  • Research report on project “Analysis of optimisation potential of level crossing systems” published

    On behalf of the Federal Railway Authority (Eisenbahn-Bundesamt – EBA) CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik and the Chair of Railway Signalling and Transport Safety (TU Dresden) carried out a scientific study on optimisation potential of level crossing systems. Therefore, a safety analysis for existing level crossing systems and a potential analysis on measures and technologies to improve the safety was prepared. Essential results have been presented in issue 8/2019 of the journal “Der Eisenbahningenieur”.
    Now, the detailed research report as well as a summary in English are published by EBA. The documents can be downloaded on the website of the German Centre for Railway Traffic Research (Deutschen Zentrums für Schienenverkehrsforschung – DZSF).

    The topic of the 25th conference, which was held on 26 and 27 September 2019, was “Modern development methods – from sketch to system solution”. In cooperation with the CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik the Chair of Railway Signalling and Transport Safety Technology at Dresden University of Technology (TU Dresden) organised this conference with more than 270 participants. Speeches and an appraisal of the history that goes back 40 years addressed the present challenges resulting from the digitalisation of the railway sector and their sustainable resolutions.

    Numerous speeches and their collateral questions met with big response. The diversified supporting programme offered deepening dialogs between railway companies, suppliers, operators and scientists.

    The 26th conference will be held on October 01 and 02 2020 in Dresden. Further information will be published on this website.

  • Workshop in China

    From July 29th to August 2nd 2019, a workshop has been held in Beijing, P.R. China. Subject was the safety assessment of specific application utilised on train control systems on high-speed railways. The experts of CERSS gave an overview about the practice of the standard series EN5012X. They demonstrated the practice on a design layout created by the Chinese Railway along with more examples, too. Participants were staff of China Railway Test & Certification Centre (CRCC) and some suppliers. Client was DB International (Beijing) Co., Ltd..

  • Paper about potential analysis for the optimisation of safety at level crossings published

    Our staff member Dipl.-Ing. Jenny Oelsner recently published a paper entitled “Optimierungspotenziale der Bahnübergangssicherung” in issue 8/2019 of the journal “Der Eisenbahningenieur”.
    Various potential improvement measures in order to avert accidents at level crossings were identified and assessed by CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik and the chair of railway signalling and transport safety technologies at Dresden University of Technology within the framework of a research study. The paper describes the emerged recommendation catalogue in detail.

  • Research project Application of CSM regulation

    If a railway company aspires to participate in railway operation in Germany for the first time, this is defined as a change to the railway system in a Member State. Consequently, risk management processes used to assess the impact of the change on safety levels and compliance with safety requirements have to be applied. On behalf of the Eisenbahn-Bundesamt (Federal Railway Authority) an exemplary implementation of this procedure will take place for an hypothetic railway company.
    At July 11, the kick-off meeting started the research project. CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik will now execute a study on the application of the defined procedure for “operation and traffic management” subsystem.

  • Presentation of work results of the project “Analysis of optimisation potential of level crossing systems”

    Within the framework of the annual level crossing workshop of the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) our staff member Dipl.-Ing. Jenny Oelsner presented the work results of the project “Analysis of optimisation potential of level crossing systems” at May 15th, 2019. The aim of the project was to identify and assess potential risk reduction measures in order to avert accidents at level crossings. A recommendation catalogue of optimisation measures for level crossings at state-owned railways was developed.

    Those optimisation measures were showcased and debated with the participants. An insight into the projects results will be provided in an article, which will be published in August 2019, too.

  • Research project “Analysis of optimisation potential of level crossing systems” finalised

    Accident rates are comparatively high at level crossings in the railway system. This marks the initial situation for the work of the research project “potential analysis for the optimisation of the safety at level crossings”, which was set up by the Federal Railway Authority (EBA). Its aim was to identify potential improvement measures in order to avert accidents at level crossings. CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik conducted the analyses in cooperation with the chair of railway signalling and transport safety (Dresden University of Technology).
    In this research project, numerous reasonable and appropriate measures for the enhancement of safety at level crossings at state-owned railways were identified and evaluated. A recommendation catalogue of optimisation measures for level crossings at state-owned railways was developed. The results will be published in a final report as well as in an article.

     

  • MoU signed in Vietnam

    CERSS was part of delegation under the leadership of the Saxonian Minister for Economic Affairs, Work and Transport H.E. Martin Dulig visiting Vietnam from 19th to 23rd November, 2018. Besides talks with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the People’s Committee the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Vietnam-German Cooperation Centre VGCC and CERSS Centre of Competence of Railway Signalling and Safety. The MoU seals the activities of education which have started in the University of Transport and Communication Hanoi in 2016. It shall be the base for joint commercial projects of development of railway infrastructure in Vietnam.

  • CERSS at parliamentary evening

    At November 6th CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik exhibited innovative projects in the second parliamentary evening. The research project “New Secondary Railway” was presented to the Saxon State Minister of Economy, Labour and Transport as well as other members of the Saxon parliament.

  • Congratulations to Ms Dr.-Ing. Daria Bachurina for her doctor’s degree

    We congratualate our project manager Ms Dr.-Ing. Daria Bachurina to awarding her doctor’s degree. She defended the PhD thesis during a regular public procedure in October. On 16th of November 2018 the Doctor’s Certificate was handed out in a ceremony on the occasion of the Day of “Friedrich List” Faculty of Transportation Sciences of Technische Universität Dresden.

  • CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik at Innotrans 2018

    On the special fair Innotrans 2018 we were present by our own box on the Saxony stand in hall 7.2. We hosted lot of guests to talk about projects which we have been called for proposals of our services. It has been a successful week.

  • Research Project ETCS Test Cases Closed

    The research project ETCS Test Cases was successfully closed in July. It was commissioned by the German Railway Authority and collaborated with the Chair of Railway Technology and Transport Safety Science. The aim of the project was to develop a complete test case catalogue that was ought to be based on the existing VDE lines equipped with ETCS safety features.

    Two work packages were submitted: Development und creation of the test case catalogue and recommendation concerning a method to examine the completeness of the test cases. A technical article will be published.

  • Trade Directory Railway! is published Duplikat

    The Bahntechnik Sachsen e.V. published the Trade Directory Railway! 2016. This booklet presents 56 companies and research institutes, which are working in the field of railway industry in Saxony.

    The CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik is developing and providing consulting services for future transportation systems and is presented in this booklet. The trade directory can be obtained free of charge at the web page of Bahntechnik Sachsen.

  • Expert analysis on the adaptation of routes in Piesteritz station Duplikat

    In station Lutherstadt Wittenberg-Piesteritz the obsolete existing interlocking system is replaced by an electronic interlocking. The station of the industrial railway of the nitrogen plant is already operated by an elctronic interlocking of a different supplier. All routes leading to or from the industrial railway are safed by both interlockings. Dependencies are implemented by an adaptation of routes materialised as relay interface.
    The special-purpose solution of the relay interface had to be assessed by an expert opinion. An inspection report was compiled, including improvements of the circuit.

    At test runs was shown, that the operation follows generally accepted codes of practice. Finally an independent expert analysis by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jochen Trinckauf was conducted and delivered.

  • Research project “Analysis of optimisation potential of level crossing systems”

    Level crossings are a hazard spot for accidents between railway and road traffic. On behalf of the Eisenbahn-Bundesamt (Federal Railway Authority) CERSS Kompetenzzentrum Bahnsicherungstechnik and the chair of railway signaling and transport safety (Dresden University of Technology) will carry out a scientific study on optimisation potential of level crossing systems.
    At February 14, the kick-off meeting started the research project. There will be a safety analysis on existing level crossing systems and a potential analysis on used technology of non federal owned and foreign railways as well as innovative technologies.
